THE WAR OF THE POET

Ungaretti in the trench wrote some of his most beautiful and heartbreaking poems. Claudia Contin, this time a tragic Harlequin, makes one relive these poems calling on the rhythms and tones that the poet himself used to spend when he read them to an audience.
As the silver thread of these universal verses some quotes from an interview, in which Giuseppe Ungaretti, moved, went back to the terrible moments when he created those chants of pain.
The Wandering Harlequin, as in the Power station of Malnisio for Tesla, sets this flaming performance in a symbolic location: the memorial gravestone to the fallen of the Great War, which the children of the Gabelli school encounter every morning on the hallway-ledge of their school…

THE WAR OF THE POET
Giuseppe Ungaretti in the trench
with Caludia Contin Arlecchino
directed by Ferruccio Merisi
“Poetry is a loving thought, thrown to the other to induce him to be more human”, this was the thought of Giuseppe Ungaretti. Thus, at war, he found himself throwing implorations for humanity while as Italian soldier had to obey to inhumanity. One can imagine the pain… In the opposite trenches, somewhere, there was an Austrian soldier named Egon Schiele. He as well, in his own way, was painting wishes for humanity. The nervous and spasmodic tensions of his portraits look surprisingly like those that Ungaretti brought with him for his whole life, when he was reading his poems “of the trenches” or replying to interviews about it.
This performance relives and listens to those tensions…
